Prof. Philippe Fournier-Viger, PhD

Biography: Philippe Fournier-Viger is distinguished professor at the Shenzhen University (China). He obtained his Ph.D at University of Quebec in Montreal (Canada) in 2010. After working as post-doctoral researcher at National Cheng Kung University, and being a faculty member at University of Moncton, he came to China in 2015 and became full professor at the Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen). There, he received a title of national talent from the National Science Foundation of China. His interests are data mining, algorithm design, pattern mining, sequence mining, big data, and applications. He has published more than 340 research papers related to data mining, intelligent systems and applications, which have received more than 8500 citations (H-Index 46). He is associate editor-in-chief of the Applied Intelligence journal (SCI, Q1) and editor-in-chief of Data Science and Pattern Recognition. He is the founder of the popular SPMF data mining library, offering more than 200 algorithms for analyzing data, cited in more than 1,000 research papers. He is a co-founder of the UDML, MLiSE and PMDB series of workshops held at the ICDM, PKDD, KDD and DASFAA conferences.
Algorithms to Discover Interesting Patterns to Improve Intelligent Systems
Today, intelligent systems play an important role in various domains such as for factory automation, education, the management of telecommunication networks and medical care. To build intelligent systems, high-quality data is generally required. Moreover, these systems can also yield large amounts of data such usage logs, alarm logs, images, videos, and data collected from sensors, and data received from other systems. Due to the large volumes of data, managing the data generated by intelligent systems to gain insights and improve these systems is thus a key challenge. It is also desirable to be able to extract information or models from data that are easily understandable by humans.
Based on these objectives, this talk will discuss the use of data mining algorithms for discovering interesting and useful patterns in symbolic data generated from intelligent systems. The talk will first briefly review early study on designing algorithms for identifying frequent patterns can be used for instance to identify frequent alarms or faults in telecommunication networks. Then, an overview of recent challenges and advances will be presented to identify other types of interesting patterns in more complex data. Topics that will be discussed include high utility patterns, locally interesting patterns, and periodic patterns. Lastly, the SPMF open-source software will be mentioned and opportunities related to the combination of pattern mining algorithms with traditional artificial intelligence techniques for intelligent systems will be discussed.

Biography: Prof. Xiao_Xiaonan, Ph.D. advisor, and the chair of the Department of Information and Computational Science at Xiamen University Tan Kah Kee College. He is the associate dean of the College of Information Science and Technology and a member of the International Association for Biostatistics & International Statistics Association. Professor Xiao is the executive director of the Biological Mathematical Society & Mathematical Society of Fujian Province. He has been awarded The Distinguished Teacher of Higher Education in Fujian Province. His expertise mainly focuses on the studies of complex systems modeling and optimal control. Dr.Hasliza A Rahim

Biography: HASLIZA A RAHIM received the bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA, in 2003, the master's degree in electronics design system from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia, in 2006, and the Ph.D. degree in communication engineering from Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Perlis, Malaysia, in 2015. In 2006, she joined the Faculty of Electronic Engineering Technology, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), as a Lecturer, where she is currently an Associate Professor. She was the Programme Chairperson postgraduate studies at the School of Computer and Communication Engineering (SCCE), UniMAP. She is a Chartered Engineer, Professional Technologist, Research Fellow with the Advanced Communication Engineering (ACE) Centre of Excellence and Head of Bioelectromagnetics Group under ACE. She was leading Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission Research Grant (worth U.S. $200k). She has been mentoring several undergraduate and about 12 graduate students. She has authored and co-authored more than 130 leading international technical journal and peer reviewed conference papers, including IEEE Access, Sensors, Microwave and Optical Technology Letter (MOTL), Progress in Electromagnetics Research (PIER), and three articles in Nature Publishing Group journals (Scientific Reports), two patent granted, two patent filings, and five book chapters. Her research interests include wearable and conformal antennas, metamaterials, antenna interaction with human body, on-body communications, green microwave absorbers, wireless body area networks, bioelectromagnetics, artificial intelligence (AI) optimization and physical layer protocols for wireless communications. Several research funds were granted nationally and internationally, such as Fundamental Research Grant Scheme, National Science Fund, and Short-Term Grant of UOWD (worth U.S. $425k). She has been a member of the technical program committees of several IEEE conferences and technical reviewer for several IEEE and other conferences. She is a Member of the IEEE and IEEE MTT-S, and a Graduate Member of the Board of Engineers Malaysia. As an advisor, her supervised projects have also won prizes, such as the Third Place in IEEE Malaysia Section Final Year Project Competition (Telecommunication Track) in 2017. She was awarded as the Chairman Discretionary Silver Award by The Global Women Inventors & Innovators Network (GlobalWIIN) in 2020 and silver medal at the International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2018).

Biography: Dr. En-Bing Lin is a full Professor of Mathematics at Central Michigan University, USA. He is a former mathematics department chair at the University of Toledo and Central Michigan University. He has taught and visited at several institutions including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of California, Riverside, University of Toledo, UCLA, and University of Illinois at Chicago. He received his Ph. D. in Mathematics from Johns Hopkins University. His research interests include Data Analysis, Image Processing, Information Theory, Bioinformatics, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Wavelet Analysis and Applications, and Mathematical Physics. He has supervised a number of graduate and undergraduate students. Dr. Lin serves on the editorial boards of several mathematics and computational journals. Professor Yizhou Yu

Biography: Yizhou Yu is a full professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong. He was first a tenure-track and then a tenured professor at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) for 12 years. He has also collaborated with Google Brain and Microsoft Research in the past. He received his PhD degree in computer science from the computer vision group at University of California, Berkeley. He also holds a MS degree in applied mathematics and a BE degree in computer science and engineering from Zhejiang University.
Prof Yu has made many important contributions to AI and visual computing, including deep learning, computer vision, image processing, and computer graphics. He is a recipient of 2002 US National Science Foundation CAREER Award, 2007 NNSF China Overseas Distinguished Young Investigator Award, ACCV 2018 Best Application Paper Award, ACM SCA 2011 and 2005 Best Paper Awards, and 1998 Microsoft Graduate Fellowship. Innovative technologies co-invented by him has been frequently adopted by the film and special effects industry. He has more than 150 publications in international conferences and journals. His current research interests include deep learning, computer vision, biomedical data analysis, computational visual media, and geometric computing. He is an IEEE fellow and ACM distinguished member.
Professor Jiankun Hu

Biography: Dr. Jiankun Hu is a full professor at the School of Engineering and IT, University of New South Wales (UNSW) Canberra (also named UNSW at the Australian Defence Force Academy (UNSW@ADFA), Canberra, Australia. He is the invited expert of Australia Attorney-Generals Office. Prof. Hu has served at the Panel of Mathematics, Information and Computing Sciences (MIC), ARC ERA (The Excellence in Research for Australia) Evaluation Committee 2014. Prof. Hu's research interest is in the field of cyber security covering intrusion detection, sensor key management, and biometrics authentication.
